When leaving a message at 4 A.M.
on the answering machine
of your ex-girlfriend,
do not be too drunk to remember
to choose your words very carefully,
and use them sparingly,
because you will only have a few seconds
to tell her all the things
that have been bouncing around your skull
over the years since your parting,
and if you say anything
that she doesn’t want to hear,
all she has to do is push a button,
and you are gone forever,
just like you are supposed to be.
